Guatemala Cervical Cancer Prevention Project
Through a global grant, Santa Cruz Rotary is supporting a two-year project (2025-2027) to bring a transformative, community based solution to 2,000 Guatemalan women in Escuintla to prevent cervical cancer through testing and treatment.
The portable DNA PCR testing machines can quickly detect high-risk HPV strains with 98% accuracy, allows women to self collect samples, and are low cost ($8 per woman). Treatment for positive cases include thermocoagulators that can remove pre-cancerous lesions in a simple, painless 20 second procedure. Cancer cases will be referred to specialists. This grant includes HPV education, promotion of the HPV vaccine and training for healthcare workers.
